We would like to thank you for taking an interest in this survey, which is being run by an independent research team at Bournemouth University (BU).

The survey should take you no more than 15 minutes to complete. Your responses will be anonymous and will be treated as confidential. All data collected will be held securely by the BU research team and will not be revealed to any third parties.

Inspired by the 2016 Character Matters Research, this survey targets people involved in museum work across the UK, at any role/position and under any status; permanent and temporary staff, interns, freelancers and volunteers are all welcome to participate.

This survey is being used to gain important information on how organisational culture and day-to-day resources and demands shape museum work outcomes. Results of our analysis will be shared with and disseminated to the profession, with the aim of informing organisational and sectoral policy.  Findings will also be used to produce an academic research article.

It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. You can withdraw from participation at any time and without giving a reason, simply by closing the browser page. The research results will be anonymised as part of the data collection process: you will not be identifiable. Please note that once you have completed and submitted your survey responses, we are unable to remove your anonymised responses from the data collected.  If you have any concerns about the conduct of the research, please email

We will use your data on the basis that it is necessary for the conduct of research, which is an activity in the public interest. We put safeguards in place to ensure that your data is kept secure and only used as necessary for this research and associated activities such as research audit. If you have any questions about how we manage your information or your rights under the data protection legislation, please contact the BU Data Protection Officer on  The data will be retained for a period of no more than two years following the closing date of the survey, at which point the data will be deleted.


The survey consists of six pages. The following three pages (pp. 2-4) will revolve around your personal motives, experiences and views regarding your museum work and workplace. The last two pages (pp. 5-6) will ask you to provide some background information about yourself and your museum.

If you are a freelancer, where you see the word 'museum' please replace it with 'sector' or 'organisation' as required.
